Aircraft Protection

Large hangars can be busy places with aircraft, tools, staging and plant. Whether commercial or military, particularly when protecting high-value assets such as helicopters, the risk of fire is ever present. It is vital to ensure an immediate and targeted application of suppression agent at the incipient stages of a fire and, most importantly, directed at and only at the fire source.

If multiple aircraft are contained within a hangar, it goes without saying that early and effective suppression is imperative to limit the fire to the aircraft in question and avoid propagation to neighbouring aircraft or associated plant and other structures. If not, total loss to the hangar building and its contents is a real possibility.

Hangar facilities are often isolated from any readily available assistance, such as fire support services, with many sites no longer having their own dedicated fire fighting vehicles or personnel.

Foam suppression is generally used in aircraft hangar protection, although not always, via technologies such as:

• Infra-red flame sensors to direct robotic foam enhanced water monitors, which would require a dedicated pump and tank system
• Self-contained ‘Guardian’ units, which are designed to provide an immediate, localised, metered application of fire suppression medium over a given footprint area limiting the operational demand and producing a controlled and intentional distribution pattern.
