Nobel part of Bankside sub-station £2 billion modernisation project
When Skanska McNicholas awarded Nobel Fire Systems the contract for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a water mist fire suppression system at Bankside sub-station, it represented one of the largest single contracts won by Nobel. Part of an overall £2 billion sub-station modernisation project run by EDF Energy the contract , due to be completed this year, remains a clear indicator of the high regard with which Nobel is held throughout the industry.
At the time, the overall investment was deemed necessary because of the growth of the population in the South East and the increasing productivity of businesses in the area, most of which rely heavily on IT systems that need power around the clock. The work carried out by Nobel Fire Systems included the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a water mist fire suppression system that extends and covers 13 separate zones. The zones include, storage and transformer rooms many of which have associated plenums running up to roof level. As an additional challenge, Nobel Fire Systems had to cater for fire protection extending under the famous ‘Tate Modern’ which lies to the front of the sub-station.
Ben Parker, Commercial Director of Nobel Fire Systems commented, “The Bankside project remains one of the largest we have undertaken to date. In addition to being an extremely complex project it retains a very high profile given that the sub-station provides power to Canary Wharf and other key commercial locations in London”.
Commenting on behalf of Skanska McNicholas, a spokesperson said, “Given the nature of our business, we only ever commission contractors that we can rely on to get it right first time, every time. Nobel Fire Systems fall into this category and we have always been totally confident of their abilities to provide a water mist suppression system that will continue to meet the on-going critical demands of the critically important Bankside sub-station”.
