A Helping Hand

Volac International Limited asked Nobel to take part in the discussions and assessment of risk for a new Biomass power plant being built in the UK.

A potentially very exciting project but also one requiring great levels of expertise and professionalism, with the site dependent on this plant for power meaning its continued operation was critical. A complex site with an ambitious build schedule ensured challenges at every stage from specification and design through to installation and commissioning.

Nobel’s first task was to assist in the identification of risks within the plant, and following discussion with all relevant parties to then submit competitive risk mitigation suggestions, specifications and a quantity of cost for the provision of an active fire suppression system that would protect the entire plant. Key areas were identified and agreed including diverse risks such as the warehouse used for stocking the biomass material, the 24 hour feed ram to the furnace, the furnace hydraulic ram, the thermal oil pumps, non-critical oil pumps, diesel generator room, turbine room, control room and LV switch room.

This was a competitive situation but after listening to our recommendations Volac had no hesitation in appointing Nobel
